Streetsville United Church (SUC) is a vibrant suburban congregation seeking a Director of Music with an interest in growing the music program in new and innovative directions. SUC is looking for a candidate with a strong willingness to build and be part of a team. The successful candidate will have technical competence in playing the organ and piano, as well as strong organizational and communication skills. He/she will meet with the Minister to develop and plan music to complement the worship service, engage in opportunities for an alternate approach to music exploring different styles, and demonstrate a willingness to be a part of the SUC community. The successful candidate will be responsible to the Church Council through the Ministry & Personnel Committee in consultation with the Minister and the Worship Committee.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Directing the Senior Choir (SATB) of 15 voices and playing the organ/piano for midweek rehearsals and Sunday services and other regularly scheduled special services and events.
  •  Meeting regularly with the Minister to ensure that the music offered in worship is consistent with the overall spiritual direction of worship.
  • Overseeing all choirs and musical ensembles, and establishing a framework for regular communication with leaders and directors of these groups including the tech team.
  • Copyright search and reporting to CCLI and One License for all music presented in a worship service.
  • Selecting and purchasing new music and music supplies which includes assisting with the purchase of music for other choirs and ensembles.
  • Planning and scheduling music for regular worship services and/or special services in the form of vocal solos, duets, quartets, instrumental solos, ensembles, bands, etc. This includes preparing music for summer months when the Senior Choir does not sing.

Working Environment:

  • SUC has a Phoenix PD351 Digital Pipe organ and Yamaha upright acoustic piano which are approximately 15 years old and well maintained.
  • Knowledge of Voices United and More Voices hymn books is an asset as would some experience with theatre.
  • Ongoing participation in the development of an overall plan, coordinated under the direction of the Minister and the Worship Committee, including all areas of the musical life of the congregation.
  • Up to fifteen (15) hrs/wk.
  • One (1) month unpaid holiday in the summer equal to four (4) Sundays.
  • Providing music for weddings and funerals preferred for which renumeration is negotiated separately.

Remuneration:

  • The start date for this position is open for discussion during an interview.
  • Remuneration will be based on qualifications and experience, following the RCCO salary scale.

Director of Music Job Description

The position is an 11 month, renewable Fee for Service Contract (Contract for Services). The position is equivalent to 2/5 part time.

1. The Director of Music will:

  • Have technical competence in playing the Phoenix organ and Yamaha acoustic upright piano and directing the Senior Choir (SATB) of 15 voices.
  • Meet with the Minister on a quarterly basis to develop and plan music for the next quarter then connect weekly to ensure the plan is still current.
  • Demonstrate a strong willingness to further develop the Ministry of Music at Streetsville United by working collaboratively with current leaders of praise bands, a junior choir as well as the tech team.
  • Explore opportunities to introduce different styles of music into worship services. Some experience with theatre would be an asset.
  • Demonstrate a willingness to be a part of the Streetsville United Church community.

2. The Director of Music is responsible for:

  • Directing the Senior Choir (SATB) of 15 voices and playing the organ/piano for all Sunday services and other regularly scheduled special services and events. These include, but are not limited to, the Good Friday Service and Christmas Choir Carol Service/Concert.
  • Directing the Senior Choir and playing the organ/piano for all weekly rehearsals, currently Wednesday evenings 7:00-8:30pm, Sunday morning rehearsals currently 9:00am, and other rehearsals as required.
  • Collaboratively working with the Minister to select anthem material and hymns. This includes meeting regularly with the Minister to ensure that the music offered in worship is consistent with the overall spiritual direction of worship. Vetting all music to be played for compliance with current copyright requirements.
  • Work toward the development of a music program, in consultation with the Minister and leaders of praise bands and junior choir, to include all areas of musical life of the SUC congregation.
  • Overall responsibility for the music program budget, including selecting and purchasing new music and music supplies, as required, subject to budgetary guidelines as set and approved by the Church Council. This may include assisting with the purchase of music for other choirs and ensembles, as necessary.
  • Planning and arranging special music for regular worship services and/or special services in the form of vocal solos, duets, quartets, instrumental solos, ensembles, bands.
  • Supervising and scheduling organ and piano maintenance within the budgetary guidelines.

3. The Director of Music is responsible to:

  • The Church Council throuth the Ministry & Personnel Committee
  • Maintain regular contact with the chair of the Worship Committee to ensure that the music program is in keeping with matters of policy and budget of the Worship Committee.

4. Working Environment

  • The church will make available to the Music Director the Phoenix PD351 Digital Pipe organ, Yamaha upright acoustic piano and practise time when there is no conflict with the activities requiring the sanctuary.
  • Knowledge of Voices United and More Voices hymn books would be an asset as would some experience with theatre.
  • Each December the Director of Music will be given an annual performance review, including a discussion of salary and working conditions.
  • The Director of Music will be encouraged to work toward the development of an overall plan that includes all areas of the musical life of the congregation.
  • The Director of Music will have the right of first refusal in providing music for weddings and funerals. Renumeration for which is negotiated separately.
